The modern network architecture of IT departmentments are being built more like other departments in the business.  For many technical and non-technical people this seems counter-intuitive.  In the early days of networks business managers really didn’t understand new technologies.  So ignored IT departments.

IT departments were left to grow organically.  The problem is that IT Experts are technology experts and not nescessarily business experts.  With the rapid changes in technology it was difficult keeping up with technology without worrying about the business.  Even today, statistically it can be shown that many technology experts in the organization don’t even know what service or product the company they work for produces.

Modern IT Departments

Business leaders began to realize that technology costs were becoming outrageous.  Hybrid managers that understood business and some technology began making the rounds of the IT departments.  Using the same principles that are used in other departments the chaos that was the IT deparment began to be organized and defined.

Departmental Break down

We all know that within an accounting department there are book keepers, CPA’s, Controllers and the CFO.  Within the IT department there is a very similar break down, technicians, System administrators, Architects and CIO.

Departmental Systems

Each area of accounting is also broken down into various roles Payroll is not the same thing as Accounts Payable.  Each accounting system has roles that support each accounting system.

IT groups are broken down into systems and supporting roles as well.  One of the most common systems we are all familiar with is the Helpdesk.  Other systems include Operations, development, customer managment, Quality Control.

System Roles

In IT system roles support a specific IT System.  In the expample of the helpdesk some fo the system roles are Operations manager, Incident manager, Problem manager, Incident technican, problem managment technician.
